A completely unknown name for me, this Italian band Syrian. Syrian is the result of the first cooperation between the 1,5 year old Infacted Recordings and the American synthpop-label A Different Drum and does exactly what man would predict after hearing this. It lies somewhere on the edge of synthpop, but filled with danceable rhythms and electro-influences as we've heard The Azoic and NamNamBulu do as well. "De-Synchronized" consists of 10 songs, but is further filled with 4 special songs, especially for the European market.
Musically, it's not much a surprise. "She Is The Dark", "Vega Velocity" and the first single "No Atmosphere" are quite good songs, but not very special. More interesting are the Iron Maiden (!) cover "Wasted Years" and the dreamy "Vision". This is one of those growing records though, and you will start to appreciate the work of this duo after a couple of spins. It grows mostly with the long, instrumental passages that are very sphereful, which - for example - results perfectly in the two first songs (who are both over 6 minutes).
The four bonus tracks are two previously released songs (on the "No Atmosphere" single, which is not available in Europe), and two new versions of "Flowers Fade" (European version) and "No Atmosphere" (Warp Edit). A nice introducting to Syrian, if you ask me

Los italianos Syrian hicieron llegar a oídos europeos gracias a Infacted Recordings su álbum debút en el ya pasado 2004, tras haber editado este mismo "De-Synchronized" un año antes en el famoso sello americano A Different Drum.
Andylab y Voyager Lorenzo Betelli han conseguido crear con su grupo una atmósfera cuando menos curiosa. A la ya clásica frialdad y mecanización a la que suelen recurrir los grupos electrónicos se le une una obsesión por el espacio, el universo, los viajes interestelares, etc. Títulos como "No Atmosphere", "Vega Velocity", "Starless" o "Nova 3001" son muestras de la pasión de estos italianos por el cosmos, aunque practicamente hay guiños a los viajes más allá de las estrellas en todos los temas.
Según palabras de los propios Syrian, han buscado unir las melodías ochenteras con los elementos bailables más modernos del synth pop y future pop, añadiéndoles letras muy melancólicas, centrándose en la soledad y en el vacío de la sociedad futurista y mostrando una nostálgica y romántica visión del fin del mundo.
Sonido trance, bombos potentes, melodías que penetran en tu mente y letras interesantes componen el sonido Syrian, principalmente orientado sin lugar a dudas a la pista de baile, en la que especialmente disfrutaría con "No Atmosphere", "Vega Velocity" o "Wasted Years" por poner algunos ejemplos, temas que lo tienen todo para convertirse en grandes éxitos en cualquier local que se precie. También hay remansos de tranquilidad como las estupendas "De-Synchronized" (que personalmente me recordó a Kraftwerk) o "Starless", dos temas preciosos para disfrutar una y otra vez.
La edición europea nos regala 4 remezclas, cosa siempre de agradecer. Prepárate a disfrutar de lo que estos italianos han definido como "Technospacepop", curioso ante todo procediendo de individuos que, como diría un buen amigo, "vienen del metal"."I synchronize my life, but I´m out of time, like an old technology in a time of discovery"

Aus dem wunderschönen Italien kam dieser Tage ein Futurepop-Projekt der besonderen Sorte zu uns. Allerdings nicht direkt über die Alpen, sondern es nahm einen Umweg über den großen Teich, um zuerst einmal recht erfolgreich auf dem amerikanischen Synthiepop-Label „A Different Drum2 veröffentlicht zu werden. Infacted Recordings haben diese CD nun dem deutschen und europäischen Publikum zugänglich gemacht.
Andylab, zuständig für Gesang und Keyboards, und Lorenzo Bettelli „The Voyager“ (Keyboard & Programmierung) bilden das Duo SYRIAN, dessen Debüt „De-Synchronized“ äußerst hörenswert ausfällt. Der Name des Projektes leitet sich von dem Stern Sirius ab, was auch schon gleich einen guten Hinweis auf Texte und Musik der beiden Soundtüftler bietet. Es handelt sich dabei um spacigen, trancigen Futurepop der besonderen Sorte, wie man ihn nicht alle Tage im Plattenspieler rotieren hat. Da mag der eine oder andere jetzt denken: „Och, nö. Tausendmal gehört – langweilig.“ Das genaue Gegenteil ist der Fall! Die treibenden Futurepop-Rhythmen werden mit 80er-Elementen, Minimalismus und wunderschönen Elektropop-Melodien gekreuzt. Unten heraus kommt Musik, die es in punkto Eingängigkeit mit DE/VISION und MESH und in punkto treibender Kraft mit SPEKTRALIZED sowie NAMNAMBULU aufnehmen kann. Am besten kann man den Output jedoch mit COLONY 5 oder T.O.Y. vergleichen. Als persönliche musikalische Vorbilder geben die beiden Jungs ALPHAVILLE und OMD an, deren Einfluss auf ihre Musik ebenfalls deutlich zu hören ist. Das eine oder andere Mal fühlt man sich auch an KRAFTWERK erinnert, was die verwendeten Samples und die Form des Minimalismus betrifft.
Andylab und Lorenzo gelingt es in 10 Tracks nebst 4 weiteren (exklusiv für die europäische VÖ getüftelten) Remixen auf „De-Synchronized“ ein perfektes Elektropop-Album mit trancigem Futurepop-Flow zu präsentieren. Die Musik ist bestückt mit sanftem und abwechslungsreich verändertem Gesang, der sich harmonisch in den zwar melancholischen, aber trotzdem recht fröhlichen Sound einfügt. Für ein Debütalbum ist die gesamte CD hervorragend und professionell produziert. Es gibt kein lästiges oder langweiliges Füllmaterial. Jeder einzelne Track ist ein Kracher. Aus diesem Grund eigenen sich auch alle 10 Tracks plus Remixe gleichermaßen als Anspieltipps - gerade recht für schöne Sommertage.
Im Moment sind SYRIAN mit der Endproduktion ihres zweiten Albums „Kosmonauta“ beschäftigt, welches ein Konzeptalbum werden soll. Es bleibt nur zu hoffen, dass ihnen mit „De-Synchronized“ Erfolg beschieden wird, verdient hätten sie es allemal. Gerade in der aktuellen Flut an mittelmäßigem F-Pop freut man sich umso mehr über solch eine Perle der tanzbaren elektronischen Klangkunst. Auf jeden Fall kann man sich auf SYRIANS Nachfolgealbum freuen.

„De-Synchronized" ist das erste europäische Album von Syrian, einem sympathischen Duo aus Italien. Infacted Recordings, in Zusammenarbeit mit A Different Drum veröffentlicht „De-Synchronized" in Europa, ein Album aus energie-geladenen Synthpop-, Trance- und Futurepop-Elementen mit sehr modernen Einflüssen, untermalt von einem starken Sänger und einer gelungenen, professionellen Produktion.
Das Album demonstriert die unter­schiedlichsten Seiten von moderner, elektronischer Pop-Musik. Wer VNV Nation, Angels And Agony Icon of Coil oder De/Vision liebt, wird auch Gefallen an Syrian haben, so unterschiedlich die Bands auch schein mögen. Auf der europäischen Ausgabe befinden sich zehn Tracks, plus vier Bonus-Tracks, welche es in sich haben.
„De-Synchronized" bietet viel Abwechslung, ohne dabei den syrianischen Stil zu verlassen. „No Atmosphere", „Wasted Years", „Vega Velocity" und „Now Is Forever" sind vier bewegungsorientierte Tanzflächen-Hits mit eingängigem Chorus, welche die Clubs zum Brodeln verwegen werden, „One More Mission" und „Starless" sind zwei gefühlvolle, langsame Ohrwürmer mit einem Hang zur Melancholie und „Nova 3001" ist eine experimentale „Halbgeschwindligkeits"-Nummer zum Entdecken.
Die vier Bonus-Tracks sind Remixe von „No Atmosphere (Single Edit)", „Vega Velocity (Voyager Mix)" , „Flowers Fade (European Version)" und nochmals „No Atmosphere (Warp Edit)", welche alle überzeugen und die neue Facetten der Songs beleuchten.
Bei A Different Drum ist kürzlich die hervorragende Single „Space Overdrive" von Syrian erschienen, welche nahtlos an das Erfolgs-Album „De-Synchronized" anschliesst.

Es wäre nicht verwunderlich, wenn man dieses Duo sowohl auf irgendwelchen Future Pop Samplern und gleichzeitig auf diversen Trance Compilations antreffen würde, denn Syrian machen einen unverschämt glatten Electrosound. Die Bässe gehen weich ins Ohr, die Melodien umschmeicheln das Gehör, sind fast so süß, dass sie deine Gehörgänge verkleben und der Gesang ist eigentlich so wie bei vielen Bands sehr an Depeche Mode angelehnt. Aber irgendwie kann man den Jungs gar kein Vorwurf daraus machen, denn sie machen das sehr konsequent und denken auch gar nicht daran, irgendetwas anderes zu machen. Thematisch geht es immer irgendwie um Raumfahrt und menschlichen Beziehungen. Besonders „No Atmosphere“, „One More Mission“ und das einzig ruhigere Lied „Starless“ sind mit solchen Hooklines versehen, dass man die Jungs einfach gut finden muss. Sie machen kurzweilige Musik, nichts anstrengendes oder anspruchvolles. Aber sie machen ihre Sache einfach gut, denn man kann darauf abtanzen und von den Strukturen her ist Syrian wahrlich nicht zu unterschätzen. Wieder mal eine geniale Neuentdeckung aus dem Hause Infacted.

MEDIENKONVERTER
Syrian ist ein italienisches Synthpop-Duo, das mit "De-Synchronized (European Edition)" sein Debüt in Deutschland bzw. Europa gibt. Ob der Name etwas mit Syrien zu tun hat, müsste man die Beiden (Andylab und Voyager) mal fragen. Syrisch klingt an dem Album auf jeden Fall nichts, stattdessen gibt es Synthpop in Reinkultur. Jedoch keinesfalls 08-15 sondern mit melodiösen Anleihen an VNV Nation, Angels & Agony oder auch Colony 5 und Electro-Sequenzer-Spuren versehen. Die Stimme ist auch, zumindest etwas, markanter als bei anderen Bands dieses Genres. Jedoch klingen einige Titel durch den typischen Synthpop-Gesang etwas weichgespült, so dass manchmal der letzte Kick fehlt. Gleich beim ersten Song "She Is The Dark" erklingen kurzzeitig italienische Worte. So gesehen wären ein paar weitere Strophen und Refrains in dieser Sprache ganz nett gewesen, denn so ist doch öfter zu hören, dass da ein Ausländer englisch singt. Außerdem hätte die CD dadurch ein paar zusätzliche Italo-Pop-Einflüsse gehabt, die der Szene vielleicht gar nicht so schlecht stehen würden. Ein starkes Stück präsentiert Syrian zu Beginn mit "No Atmosphere". Der Titel ist auch schon als Maxi erschienen (bei A Different Drum) und in zwei weiteren Mixen auf der CD vertreten. Der Single-Mix beginnt allerdings so, als ob der Titel bereits eine Weile läuft – einfach Aufnahme beim schon laufenden Original gedrückt. Nichtsdestotrotz - tanzbar, melodiös, ein Refrain, der sofort im Ohr hängen bleibt und damit auch absolut clubtauglich. Ebenfalls in die Club-Richtung gehen "Wasted Years", "Now Is Forever" oder auch "Vega Velocity", welches im "Voyager Mix" noch etwas mehr Rumms hat. Sehr attraktiv sind auch die beiden ruhigen Stücke "Vision" und "Starless". "Vision" groovt sich im 4-on-the-floor-Beat langsam aber stetig wunderschön melodig ans Ende, was bei mehrmaligem Hören immer eher kommt. Das würde im Club auf jeden Fall sehr gut ankommen. "Starless" ist eine schöne, elektronisch melodische Ballade, die selbst nach dem 3. oder 4. Durchlauf immer noch zum Innehalten und nicht zum Skippen zum nächsten Uptempo-Clubhit verleitet. Als letztes sei noch der eher Album-untypische Instrumental-Titel "Nova 3001" erwähnt, der mit seinen 1:43 min Länge trotz seiner Andersartigkeit zu kurz erscheint, weil er zeigt, was Syrian abseits der gesungen Titel noch anbieten können. Alles in Allem in starkes Debüt, das die Lust am Synthpop wieder aufleben lässt

E’ sempre un piacere parlare di progetti italiani che si sono fatti onore all’estero, e questo è assolutamente il caso dei Syrian. Prova ne è il fatto che prima dell’edizione europea questo disco è stato pubblicato negli USA e addirittura in edizione coreana!
De-Synchronized e una sorta di viaggio interstellare alla ricerca di emozioni e sentimenti perduti, con i pianeti che simboleggiano gli esseri umani che nelle loro orbite si incrociano periodicamente per poi allontanarsi inesorabilmente. Un viaggio pieno zeppo di citazioni, a partire dalla splendida copertina del CD, che ritrae il disegno stilizzato di un Gundam, simbolo delle avventure spaziali per tutti coloro che erano bambini all’inizio degli anni ottanta.
Il sound dei Syrian è molto chiaro: l’EBM degli anni duemila, il futurepop orientato alla pista e con influenze trance, senza mai dimenticare il sentimento sempre presente nelle canzoni, in particolar modo quando il ritmo si abbassa per lasciar spazio ad alcune pregevoli ballate elettroniche.
Che i nostri non abbiano timore a mostrare le proprie origini si vede subito dalla prima traccia del disco, “She Is The Dark” il cui testo è in gran parte in italiano. Il manifesto del gruppo è rappresentato da ritornelli particolarmente orecchiabili innestati su ritmiche molto trascinanti. Non è raro ritrovarsi sovrappensiero a canticcihare le loro canzoni senza nemmeno accorgersene, e oltre questo primo pezzo, anche “No Atmosphere”, “Vision 215” e “Now Is Forever” ne sono ottimi esempi: ognuno di questi è un potenziale riempipista per le serate elettroniche.
Anche “Vega Velocity” rientra sicuramente nella categoria dei floorkiller, ma a mio parere con qualcosa di più e in effetti risulta il mio pezzo preferito del disco. Sicuramente trascinante e con un particolare alone oscuro che il mio vecchio animo darkettone non può che apprezzare.
Nel disco non mancano anche un paio di riuscitissime cover: “Wasted Years” degli Iron Maiden, a testimoniare le diverse influenze subite dalla band, e soprattutto “One More Mission” dei Rockets, indimenticati paladini del rock spaziale degli anni ottanta e sicuramente ispiratori dei Syrian, come testimonia anche la bellissima title-track “De-Synchronized”, pezzo ritmico anche se più lento, il cui uso del vocoder non può non ricordare i grandi argentati francesi.
Altro pezzo lento è “Starless”, vera e propria ballad elettronica dal sapore estremamente malinconico così come il testo, come testimonia una strofa del ritornello: “and you said you would wait forever, we will be together one day…”
Chiude il disco la breve e sincopata “Nova 3001”, pezzo strumentale che lascia spazio ad alcuni remix che costituiscono il bonus della versione europea del disco: due di “No Atmosphere”, una diversa versione di “Flowers Fade” e un bellissimo remix di “Vega Velocity” che a mio modesto parere non sfigurerebbe in nessuna scaletta elettronica degna di questo nome.
Insomma, i Syrian sono un’altra band che tiene alto il nome dell’elettronica del Bel Paese, tanto vituperata e snobbata da noi quanto apprezzata all’estero, cui va tutto il nostro plauso e incoraggiamento.

:RITUAL:
Quando un ottimo disco è anche un ottimo disco italiano!
Lo ammetto, quasi non volevo crederci. Pensavo che questi Syrian fossero altri Syrian. Credevo che "quei" Syrian che ci erano piaciuti al ounto da includere il loro goth malinconico e fresco, vagamente in stile Tiamat, sul Vol.1 di :Per:version, fossero una della tante band italiane che si perdono fra un demo e l'altro, fra un cambio di formazione e una disillusione in più. Invece, sotto l'ala protettrice di una label orgogliosa e di qualità come la A Different Drum (a cui gran parte della scena synth-pop ed electro americana dovrebbe pagare un tributo), arriva il debutto ufficiale di questi milanesi, oggi trasformatisi in una trascinante, elegante e sinuosa navicella che sfrutta come propulsione un ritmatissimo synth-pop. Lorenzo Bettelli, mastermind del progetto, è un musicista figlio dei nostri tempi: curioso, onnivoro, in perenne mutazione. Ne è la prova l'eccezionale cover di Wasted Years degli Iron maiden (me ce n'è una anche dei Rockets!!), brano che dice tutto sull'evoluzione artistica e dei gusti di Bettelli e che aspetta solo il dancefloor per dimostrare tutta le sue nascoste potenzialità crossover. La trasformazione elettronica dei Syrian rappresenta un doppio, coraggioso azzardo: da una parte, la voglia di non fermarsi su una sonorità specifica, dall'altra, quella di mettersi in gioco, di provare che anche una formazione italiana può carpire il segreto della "daza elettronica" e muoversi su un terreno che da queste parti ha sia pochi interpreti che seguaci. Ma attenzione, quello dei Syrian non è il synth-pop giocoso, allegro, naif di S.P.O.C.K:, No Comment o di tante leggerine formazioni tedesche. E' un suono ricco di charme, apparentemente fragile, un suono che fa galleggiare in superficie una malinconia palpitante, riuscendo però ad essere sempre freddo, controllato, distaccato, come un'aristocratica creatura femminile di un altro pianeta (un esempio? I colleghi di etichetta Iris). Le liriche accompagnano perfettamente le atmosfere siderali della band e l'interpretazione distante di Andylab suggerisce la malinconia e la solitudine del cosmo (vedi "Vega Velocity"), dove giunge ancora l'eco di perdute trasmissioni radio ("De-Synchronized", in cui sembrano dei Welle:Erdball spediti su Saturno) o in cui improvvise scariche elettriche/elettroniche "disturbano" la pace perenne (il ritmo sostenuto della long version di "No Atmosphere" o "She is the Dark", cantata in parte in italiano). Se poi le radio italiane riuscissero a captare il segnale e osassero trasmettere "Vision 215", ci troveremmo con un euro-pop hit in più da ascoltare al Festivalbar. Una grossa sorpresa, che si è trasformata subito in un ottimo disco.

"De-syncronized" del duo milanese Syrian è un disco per il quale in pochi, qui in Italia, hanno pensato bene di spendere due parole.
Sinceramente, tutti qui su Kaos Kulture, ci chiediamo il perchè di una quasi totale assenza di promozione, recensioni, critiche. Ci chiediamo "perchè" soprattutto dopo aver ascoltato questo splendido 10tx, rilasciato da A Different Drum (Usa) e distribuito da diversi grossi canali come Amazon, cdnow, Virginmega, Borders... Personalmente non riesco (ancora) a digerire il cantato in italiano (una mia turba psichica, una mia personale convinzione e più semplicemente il mio ameno gusto personale), sperimentato a metà nella opener "She is the dark". Per il resto non mi è molto difficile affermare che attualmente i Syrian sono il gruppo più completo, capace, tecnicamente invidiabile ed incredibilmente "serio" all'interno del panorama synth-pop-ebm italiano. "No Atmosphere" è un pezzo coinvolgente, avvolgente, realmente emozionante, il mio preferito in assoluto: un pezzo dinamico, da dance-floor, dalla struttura molto semplice, come gran parte dell'intero disco del resto, dalle melodie immediate ed efficaci, pensate e concepite con criterio ed intelligenza. Splendide anche la title-track, "Now is forever", "Vega Velocity"...
I Syrian dondolano tra il futurepop, l'ebm, il synthpop, passando anche per piacevoli scenari psichedelici... Un accostamento a gente come Apoptygma Berzerk strategicamente mixati alla purezza melodica di Alphaville, Iris, Depeche mode, non sarebbe da considerarsi un'eresia. Ottimo il lavoro dietro i microfoni del singer Andylab, diretto, padrone, trascinatore. Assoltamente impeccabile la pulizia del suono, la tecnica, le strutture di tutti i brani.
Praticamente disarmante la bellezza delle soluzioni melodiche. Un gioiello "made in Italy". Per quanto mi riguarda, l'unico vero gruppo ebm in Italia. Da stra-supportare.

SYRIAN son una joven formación italiana nacida en 1999. Desde entonces, hasta su contratación con el sello norteamericano A different drum, han intentado hacerse una escena dentro del synthpop más bailable. Con su MCD de presentación, No atmosphere, han puesto el listón muy alto. Unos registros vocales más que aceptables, acompañados de melodías pegadizas y un gran ritmo hacen de SYRIAN una apetecible banda tanto para la escucha como para el movimiento. Quizá el grupo peque en sus composiciones de elemenos algo reiterativos y muy usados, pero sorprenden aplicándoles unas intensas bases que entonan el ritmo de los
temas. Las remezclas son también muy interesantes. Sin duda, no hay que perder de vista a estos SYRIAN. Recomendado para aficionados del synthpop que anden buscando algo diferente y a un ritmo algo más veloz.

PREMONITION M.A.G.A.Z.I.N.E.
Un duo italien dévoué à la future pop : voilà qui ouvre de nouveaux horizons au label américain de référence en matière de synthpop. Le premier album de Syrian s’impose dès les premières mesures comme une fusion inédite des rythmiques euro beat du nord et d’une sensualité toute latine. Un peu de trance, jamais agressive néanmoins, porte des compositions pop d’une finesse toute louable. Si quelques sonorités sont carrément commerciales, pour autant la spontanéité demeure dans un esprit très indépendant, avec des morceaux archi construits et quelques vocalises de "gentil garçon" à la Alphaville. On pense même parfois au meilleur d’Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark sauce technopop. Le mélange est plutôt rafraîchissant et déroutant. Il y a de la naïveté kraftwerkienne derrière tout ça, qui pourrait aussi rappeler les débuts de Komputer, le côté dance en plus sur neuf des dix morceaux. Bref, une découverte qui ravira vos amis DJs, pour des nuits enflammées cet été.

This is the debut album for Syrian on the A Different Drum label, and represented a significant shift in styles for the band. The band formerly played a darkwave/gothic blend of styles that some referred to as gothic metal. However, that has all benn pushed to the wayside in favor of a new, thumping and highly energetic Synthpop/Trance/Futurepop blend that yields insanely catchy dance songs and 2 moody yet poignant ballads/ mid-tempo tracks.
Seriously, this album is packed to the gills with great dance songs - killer choruses, nimble synthwork and pulsing, pounding beats combined to make nearly every track a club sensation. "She Is The Dark" is the first Syrian track I had the fortune to hear, and ever since then I've been hooked into the band's well-crafted danceable style of synthpop. The single "No Atmosphere" is presented here in a full-length 6:30 version, and the track "Vega Velocity" (of which a remix was featured on the "No Atmosphere" single) turns out to be even more fun than the remix I've previously heard.
Even when the tempo does slow down for "One More Mission" and "Starless", the tracks still are very catchy and well-done. This is a band that excels in all aspects of song writing, making the songs futuristic while not overblown or silly, and even when mixing in their native Italian language the band keep it interesting and very sing-along-able. In short, this is a excellent, well crafted cd that I highly recommend fans of synthpop and "industrial dance" pick up. I think you'll really enjoy it!

The first time I heard this debut from this Italian duo I thought it sounded a bit too lightweight and fey for comfort. Now I've listened to it a few more times and got into what they're about more it's true that although this initial reaction was greatly exaggerated this is definately one for the pop end of 'future pop' (which is how ADD have classed the band) as, while the beats are strong enough and the widespread trance elements are used to good effect throughout they do have an easily accessable dancey sound that could even appeal to those who enjoy dance albums such as the "Euphoria" series. The vocodered and heavily accented vocal style gives the band a more characteristic touch with the opening "She Is The Dark" makes good use of this and the choruses as a whole should become easily recognisable quite quickly although I'm not sure that when many people hear "Wasted Years" they won't be wondering if this is the latest Neuroticfisch single while the melodic and lively "No Atmosphere" comes across as a lighter version of Icon Of Coil. Such likenesses can only mean that a good deal of dancefloor success is on the cards as the duo succesfully mix future pop and synthpop stylings to good effect, an approach that pays dividends for the band throughout (even if "Vision 215 is dangerously lightweight!!) right until the album's end with "Now Is Forever" and the slightly funky closer "Nova 3001" giving you another chance to get yourself moving. Encouragingly, the slower "One More Mission" (which is the album's highlight, in my opinion!) and the Kraftwerk-like touches of the title track help to ward off any worries that Syrian might prove to be a one-trick pony, promoting a wider variety of moods and tempi that is most welcome in making this a more rounded album which should, in tung give it a much longer lasting appeal. This approach is taken to it's logical conclusion with the nicely melodic "Starless" which has a slightly ambient mood to it.
Although very much sticking to an established electro blueprint Syrian manage to add enough interesting ideas to this debut which makes it a worthwhile purchase for those who like their music free of harshness without becoming bland.

VERSACRUM
Non mi capita spesso di dover recensire un disco di musica elettronica ad opera di artisti italiani, ma in quelle rare occasioni mi sono sempre imbattuto in dischi validi (Pulcher Femina ed XP8) .... il "trend" viene confermato anche oggi con il pregevole "De-synchronized" ad opera dei Syrian, duo milanese-astigiano, che partendo da esperienze musicali diverse, trova ora la sua giusta dimensione nel genere synth-pop/EBM riuscendo anche a conquistarsi un contratto con una signora label come l'americana A Different Drum, una delle etichette leader in questo genere musicale. Accade così che un gruppo italiano produca un disco veramente bello e raccolga il meritato successo oltre Oceano e sia invece ancora semi-sconosciuto in Patria.... misteri e miserie del panorama musicale italiano. "De-synchronized" come detto, è un ottimo esempio di musica elettronica che nei suoi vari episodi spazia tra il synth-pop, l'EBM ed il future-pop, ma che affonda le sue radici in suoni sintetici di pura matrice "wave" risalenti ai primi anni ottanta. Emblematica la cover dei Rockets "One more mission" : questa ed altri brani hanno sonorità molto "old-style" che ci fanno capire che siamo al cospetto di due musicisti con alle spalle anni di passione per certa musica; sonorità e tematiche "spaziali" si susseguono in buona parte dei brani del cd, zeppo di potenziali hits. Si parte con "She is the dark", brano con tutte le caratteristiche per spopolare in pista; "Vision" altro grande hit che (senza ironia alcuna) mi ha ricordato gli Eiffel 65 (e quindi mi chiedo perchè se le radio italiane ci propinano gli Eiffel non possono togliersi i paraocchi e trasmettere anche i Syrian ed altri ?); la già nota ed ottima "No Atmosphere" ed una magistrale cover di "Wasted Years" degli Iron Maiden. Insomma, un disco bello e meritevole di riscontri ad opera di una band che promette di darci grandi soddisfazioni.... bando ad ogni esterofila, c'è chi sa produrre buona musica elettronica anche in Italia !

HEADUNTER
Vem da Itália a mais recente sensação do synth/future pop internacional. Com um vocal versátil, arranjos trabalhados, uma fantástica batida dancante e letras inteligentes onde a temática é a technologia e espaço, a banda Syrian consegue mostra-se madura em suas produções apesar de ter apenas 4 anos de formação. Ouvindo uma faixa após a outra, pode-se notar a versatilidade de ritmos que vão do dark ao techno/trance. Na faixa de abertura, a mistura do inglês com o italiano é bastante simpática. A faixa 8 (Startless) é lenta, com uma letra depressiva e efeitos futuristas, nos faz viajar pelo espaço. Enfim, um álbum delicioso de se ouvir do início ao fim.

This is one of those reviews where my specific taste is given room to fully blossom. I just love Syrian's type of synthpop/techno/trance combo and the way the singer varies his vocal style. Now, he is not particularly strong but his low-key presence adds to the whole of the Syrian concept. The theme is technology in general and space in particular and it may sound corny, but I find some of the lyrics quite clever.
Italians Syrian used to be a goth rock band but changed style completely as they wanted to focus more on the dance side of electronic music. Their first single release off "De-Synchronized", called "No Atmosphere", absolutely floored me with its irresistibly cool chorus and club tainted basics. The album is not all about fast tempo, though, a fact proven beautifully by the title track where the band plays with mid tempo surroundings and a laid back feeling. The continues to explore the richness of otherworldly themes all the way to the end, leaving me, and hopefully fans of synthpop, techno and trance/dance as well, utterly satisfied. With an even stronger voice and a tighter production "De-Synchronized" would have made me dizzy. Now I just can't stop dancing.

VAMPIRE FREAKS
After their "No atmosphere" single was released, I've been waiting to hear what these guys would come out with next. The "No atmosphere" single was great, and this album holds up to the same great style which they had on "No atmosphere". These guys are from Italy, which is cool, since I don't really know of any other cool industrial / synthpop bands from Italy, even though Italy does have an amazing techno scene, and lots of great electronic music does come out of Italy. This CD is on the A Different Drum Label, America's source for Synthpop, yes these guys are a synthpop band, but definitely more futurepop / club oriented than most synthpop bands, which is cool because it is upbeat and great to dance to. The style is basically fluffy synthpop vocals, with dancey ebm club music behind it.
Track by track commentary:
01 - She is in the dark
a great track to start out the album, has a powerful moving dance beat, and the vocals start out in italian, which i found to be very cool. eventually there are some english vocals mixed in, so its pretty interesting how the two languages are combined in this track. overall its a great track, would be great to play at a club as it has a futurepop / ebm sound to it.
02 - No Atmosphere
I was already quite familiar from this track, from hearing the single, and it is a personal favorite of mine and i play it pretty often when i dj. this is actually a remix of the track which is on the single, and quite a good remix at that, has a lot more techno influence to it.
03 - De-Synchronized
A more melodic synthpop song, yet still somewhat upbeat, has some great synth melodies, and apparently there's some french samples in it. Also there's some vocal distortion to make it sound kinda robotic in a couple of the parts, which sounds good.
04 - Vision
an upbeat synthpop track, has a very catchy chorus that just sticks in your head, and the accopanying melody is very addictive as well.
05 - One More Mission
OK, what is this song doing here? Sounds kinda like country / western music, with some electronics behind it. In all honesty, this song just sucks.
06 - Vega Velocity
Another track that was on the "No Atmosphere" single. This was also a favorite of mine, and it's also a cool new remix. This is a really good club track as well.
07 - Wasted Years
a more fluffy synthpop track, still has a high bpm, and some nice electronic melodies, its just a more happy gay sounding song, then again, it is synthpop. overall its a good track.
08 - Starless
a very slow song, with depressing lyrics. the vocal effects sound kind of sci-fi like, i didnt really find this song all that exciting.
09 - Now is Forever
the electronics behind this song sound good, and its an upbeat track with a nice flow to it. the vocals are a bit monotone, but there's some cool trance elements to the track.
10 - Nove 3001
at only one minute and 43 seconds, this is an instrumental track, with a couple random samples in the background, then ends with a sample that says "end of transmission".

After hearing and enjoying very much the single versions of some of the songs on the No Atmosphere single, I was very delighted to pick up this album and hear much more of this driving and stellar sound. I must begin with the statement that fans of driving synthpop will love this album. I really enjoy much of the current trend in darker EBM and futurepop with the deeper or clearer vocals. With the release of this powerful synthpop music, I would say it borders on the finelines that separate the futurepop and EBM sound. But you add the futuristic, "spacepop" sound and it becomes fun all over again in a new way.
Beginning with the hard-driving track "She is the Dark" this track is the only on the album that mixes both Italian and English vocals. Something that they should do a little more of, as different languages can be just as interesting as different moods, lyrical styles or instruments. The pounding rhythms and excellent layered synths really provide an extraordinary power on this track. This same style continues with the popular single "No Atmosphere". This track maintains some driving monotony in the music, but adds a certain touch of melodic grace in the vocals and synths, especially during the chorus.
We take a little trip into the futuristic places on this album with the next couple of tracks "De-Synchronized" with it's vocoded robotic-style vocals and music, and a different angle but still futuristic with "Vision". The next big highlight for me also had a remix appear on the No Atmosphere single. "Vega Velocity" is this next treat with more of the great driving synths and beat we heard at the beginning of the album. Still maintaining that melodic synthpop sound mixed with an undertone of monotony that's so popular and actually sounds really good in the futurepop and EBM world. The way it all breaks down maintains a futuristic approach, but it almost becomes dreamy during the breaks and chorus in the song.
The last few tracks vary slightly in different ways, but the big difference is the down-tempo track "Starless". This gets down into a slow groove that's very nice and reminds me a bit of 80's sytnhpop bands that would do this quite a bit. Overall a great album and if you enjoyed the single, then you'll absolutely love this album.

Hmmm... italian synthpop/futurepop with a cover of Iron Maiden¹s ³Wasted Years². How could I possibly go wrong??? When I got home and listened to this for the first time, I thought to myself ³what was I thinking? Why do I keep buying things like this!?.
Truth be told, however, I began to likeŒDe-synchronized¹ during my second listen. The melodies began to stick in my head. I do like that clean, robotic sound synthpop (or futurepop as it¹s sometimes called) gives. Although I do prefer a slightly harder sound than Syrian¹s new disc offers.
Songs range from dance floor hit wannabes to emotionally barren chill-out diddys. Sadly, Syrian does very little with their cover of Iron Maiden¹s ³Wasted Years². This gimmicky concept of a synth act doing a 180 degree spin on a hard rock classic has been done before, anyway. Apoptgyma Beserk¹s cover of Metalica¹s ³Fade to Black² was so much better. My biggest complaint about ŒDe-synchronized¹ is the lack of italian-language vocals. You guys are from Italy. Sing in italian! It¹s a gorgeous tongue. Us it!
There is only one song on De-synchronized with italian lyrics. ³She is the Dark² opens the album perfectly. Only the chorus is sung in english. But that is all you are treated to. This album would have been so much more unique and sweepingly beautiful if
only three or four more tracks had used italian lyrics. I wish foreign acts would stop trying to appeal to American audiences so much. That¹s especially true within this electronia genre. Understanding lyrics has never been a top priority
anyway. Still, Syrian's De-Synchronized is a nicely polished and enjoyable peice of spacey fluff.

I Syrian guardano al passato e allo stesso tempo al futuro. Sono una di quelle band che, imparata la lezione del synth pop degli ottanta, la traducono in una versione valida per il nuovo millennio e poi la usano come punto di partenza. "De-Synchronized" infatti è un album che varia e saltabecca parecchio intorno a techno ultra moderna, ma allo stesso tempo non si dimentica della wave più romantic. Il risultato? Un album discreto, che tratteggia linee piacevoli anche se a volte non troppo personali e basi molto spesso dedicate a chi ama i dance floor.
L`iniziale "She Is The Dark" è il brano più "commerciale" dell`album, un vero inno da disco, con la voce distaccata a fare da contrappunto a un refrain davvero orecchiabile. Il viaggio prosegue quindi con una sterzata sempre più netta verso brani synth pop, la title track o "One More Mission" dove l`influenza degli `80 si sente parecchio e che mi ricorda certi lavori di casa Cohaagen. "Wasted Years" è il ritorno a suoni da disco, sparati ma abbastanza semplici, poco personali come detto in precedenza. Resta ancora il tempo per sorbire la morbida "Starless" e chiudere con "Now Is Forever" che sottolinea ancora pregi e difetti di "De-Synchronized": abilità nel lavorare sulle melodie e sui suoni, difficoltà a rendere il tutto caratteristico e particolare.
